Josh One releases new single ‘Wrong Way’ feat. Shana Halligan on Plug Research Records

The songwriter, DJ and producer of digital music known as Josh One has released his latest single, “Wrong Way,” featuring Shana Halligan of Bitter:Sweet. The track, dropping October 14th, has been published on the Plug Research Records music label, which sports such popular acts as Boom Clap Bachelors, Coultrain, and Mwahaha. Dark, jazzy, and unstoppably stylish, “Wrong Way” by Josh One is an electronica anthem sure to snare fans of every music genre.

Josh One cites as main artistic inspirations the Beatles, A Tribe Called Quest, James Brown, and Portishead. Of these, the last seems to have influenced “Wrong Way” most. However, as a veteran DJ/producer, Josh One has gained a reputation for making records that are derivative of exactly no one. Asked to describe any themes his new single may have in store for listeners, he says the message is, “That music does not have to be genre specific.”

Neither is his artistic aim without a corresponding methodology. Original tracks by Josh One develop through a homegrown system of inventiveness on the part of various talented performers and individual imaginations.

“I write, produce, program and arrange the music,” writes Josh One. “I also collaborate and write with brilliant musicians to obtain a live sound nobody else can create, and my vocalists usually write their own lyrics.”

As a result, “Wrong Way” sounds like the ghost of Billie Holiday hardwired to a circuit board. A classy, cool and haunting ballad, it is as cross-cultural as it is timeless. To describe its timbre as fresh and unique understates the importance of such rogue and unexpected tones in contemporary music.

The need for new sounds is particularly dire in today’s electronic music category, which has been increasingly plagued by “press-play” DJs since the explosion of EDM fueled by the dubstep fad. Unlike these doppelganger singles intended to bait a specifically targeted audience, “Wrong Way” can mesmerize fans of Skrillex and Ella Fitzgerald equally well.

Josh One first topped the charts in Europe with his #1 hit, “Contemplation (King Britt Funke Mix)” in 2001. His remixes of tracks like “Po’ Folks” by Nappy Roots and “Out of My League” by Fitz and the Tantrums have kept him in the spotlight for more than a decade. His music has been a staple of popular television programs like “CSI New York,” “CSI Miami” and “CSI Vegas,” and also appears in advertisements for Acura and Microsoft. Stan Swanson releases new EP ‘Driving Down to Eden’

The singer and songwriter known as Stan Swanson has released his latest EP record, “Driving Down to Eden.” The EP is composed of four original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 14 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release on the Stony Meadow Records music label. Generally found online listed in the contemporary folk category, Swanson’s “Driving Down to Eden” is a purely American record colored brightly with earnest storytelling and a dash of rock ‘n’ roll.

That Swanson’s music should fall into the folk genre makes sense. He lists as main artistic influences Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Patty Larkin, Bob Lind, and the Beatles. Like the best folk artists, however, his overall timbre is his own and he sounds like no one but himself. As a songwriter with decades of experience playing his own music, this also seems intuitive. Swanson began writing music at the age of 13 in the 1960s.

“I write songs that speak to me on a personal level,” he explains. “Some have deeper messages than others. I mean, every songwriter writes about falling in love as well as falling out of love. And, yes, I have written my fair share of those. But I also relate to the folk music of the sixties which was a great era for songs that had something special to say.”

Like some of the best loved folk tunes of that epoch, however, there’s more to Swanson’s sound than the traditional folk pattern.

“I am a very eclectic songwriter and although I feel my roots are in the folk genre, my songs take me in every direction possible.”

Swanson’s inclination to diverge from typical modes of folk music is a reflection of his own multifaceted nature. While ‘Driving Down to Eden” is his most widely distributed album to date, he is also the published author of several popular books available online.

Swanson writes, “I split most of my time between writing novels and performing. I have written eight books and am working on a couple more.”

Nevertheless, fiction can only satisfy his muse by so much.

“I’ve played in many groups and bands and then went solo for awhile. I left the music scene for several years, but that magical pull finally brought me back. There’s nothing quite like it.”

Jeff Gray releases new single ‘The Stories’

The composer and producer of electronic dance music known as Jeff Gray has released his latest single, “The Stories,” featuring Corey Friesenhan. The track has been proudly published as an independent release entirely without financial backing from the corporate music industry. Spacious and ethereal, rhythmic and buoyant, vivifying and full of drum ‘n’ bass, “The Stories” is a single which helps define the signature Australian EDM sound called Melbourne bounce.

The DJ from southeastern Australia cites as main artistic influences many of the world’s most respected contemporary digital musicians, such as Avicci, Will Sparks, Calvin Harris, Joel Fletcher, SWM, TJR, and Reece Low. Gray’s own style, however, is only tinted by such inspirations, having an overall color which takes its hue from the sonic culture of his locale.

After leaving the New South Wales Police Force, Gray began performing as a DJ all around the area’s best dance clubs. His official bio states that “Jeff Gray earned his stripes at venues such as the Goulburn Workers Club, the Burns Club in Canberra, the Mittagong RSL Club and various other venues in Goulburn, the Southern Highlands, and the Australian Capital Territory.”

Gray picked up music at the age of seven, beginning with guitar. When the rest of his life got in the way of his music, it would take many years before working as a disc jockey for parties and clubs started his creative machinery whirling again.

“I enjoy playing and making music that makes me feel good,” he writes. “If I can replicate that feeling in others, then that’s a bonus. Music should always be a visceral experience and I hope to invoke many different emotions with music I play and produce.”

Jeff Gray has been producing music now since 2011. His featured musician on “The Stories,” Corey Friesenhan, is a seasoned producer in his own right and will release the second volume of his popular vocal sessions collection, “Banshee,” in October of 2014.

La’Que releases new LP ‘Who’s Backstabbing Who?’

The veterans of R ‘n’ B music known as La’Que have released their latest LP record album, “Who’s Backstabbing Who?” The album is composed of nine original songs for an approximate total listening time of 40 minutes. Nuova Divisione release new LP ‘The Last Man in Europe’

The progressive rock band from Italy known as Nuova Divisione have released their new LP record, “The Last Man in Europe.” The album comprises 11 original tracks for an approximate total listening time of one whole hour, making for a comprehensive treatment of the band’s new material and a fine introduction for rock fans not yet acquainted. It has been proudly published as an independent release without support from the corporate music infrastructure. Written, performed and produced with the most integral principles of classic rock in mind, Nuova Divisione’s “The Last Man in Europe” is definitive proof that prog-rock is both alive and kicking like crazy.

The story is quite weird: a mixture between the Book of Revelation, Dhamma Pada, Greek Mythology, Nietzsche, Monty Python and a long lucid dream. Paperfox releases debut EP ‘Dreamcatcher’

The Los Angeles indie and alt-rock band billed as Paperfox have released their debut EP record, “Dreamcatcher.” The extended-play album is composed of five original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 20 minutes. With gumption and ability like this in equal parts, Paperfox won’t be confined to the hipster Mecca of Silverlake for long.

Singer-songwriter Retz releases new single ‘Sweet Memories’

The singer and songwriter from Sweden known as Retz has released his latest single, “Sweet Memories.” The track has been published on the Mareld Records music label. With traditional folk-style lyrics and that unmistakably American sound, “Sweet Memories” is a genuine country-western ballad from across the pond, one which no fan of the genre should miss.

Retz (often stylized RETZ) cites as main artistic influences such legends as the Rolling Stones, BB-King, the Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Paul Carrack, Phil Collins. Bill Haley, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, and Bruce Springsteen. His characteristic vocal tone has elements of both Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, and it stands out even against the background of expert guitar work and marvelous songwriting.

Speaking of the themes of his new single, Retz writes, “Whether it’s the love of a man to a woman he’s so drawn to, a mother letting go of her son for so many years, or simply missing a loved one, this song ‘Sweet Memories’ speaks for itself.”

Retz puts his enjoyment of music before other related concerns. “I am an independent artist,” he writes. “The most important thing for me is to always keep it fun to create music. Thereafter, it will be really fun if people like what I create.”

Retz was born in 1956 growing up with rock, soul, blues and country music. He joined his first publicly noted band in the late sixties. He played rock music with Bobcat’s Rock Show in Gothenberg, and after an extended hiatus recorded an EP called “Lightning” in 2012. Spring of 2014 saw the release of his “Ride the Wave” EP, after which he corresponded with Australia’s Ramon Ray. Ray wrote lyrics and sent them to Retz, and “Sweet Memories” is the timely result of their collaboration.

Eric Shenefield releases new LP ‘Southwest’

The jazz pianist known as Eric Shenefield has released his latest LP record, “Southwest.” The record contains 11 original tracks for an approximate total listening time of one hour, bringing “Southwest” closer to the length of a double LP than that of a traditional long-play album alone. It has proudly been published as an independent release without support of the corporate music industry. Mainly focused on the imaginative and liberating principles of jazz fusion, “Southwest” is an especially colorful example of complexity expressed through simplicity, and one of the most inventive collections of original jazz songs to be released in the new millennium.

Shenefield cites as main artistic influences George Duke, Chick Corea, Joe Sample, Oscar Peterson, Jeff Lorber, Elton John, Tribal Tech, the Crusaders, and Steely Dan. Many of the traits which slated these for the annals of music history are present in Shenefield’s “Southwest,” but his own creative motivations don’t play solo on this LP. The composer is quick to point out that this new record showcases some of the jazz scene’s finest instrumentalists at the zenith of their game.

“This album is for people who want to listen to music that is artfully crafted and sonically mixed to hear the contribution of every musician,” Shenefield writes. “It represents the efforts of many very gifted people. I want to share that message with all who hear it.”

Neither is his goal merely collaboration for collaboration’s sake, either.

“It is my hope that people will hear something new and exciting each time they listen. I have written the music, but it is the collaboration of the musicians and engineers that makes it special.”

Pianist Eric Shenefield has been playing for nearly forty years. He considers his current group to be the culmination of a life spent performing music. Having begun at home at the age of eight, his skills honed and polished at the university level, Shenefield now provides services as a keyboardist, band leader, composer and arranger. He has performed in top-40 and jazz bands all over the United States.

“The whirring of a fan or the hum of tires as we travel down the road represent the possibility of inspiration,” he writes. “We can create music by what we feel and hear if we are open to those possibilities. Music is everywhere. Being willing to hear it is the gateway to a whole new world of sound.”

JLoyal releases new EP ‘Trappin’ in My Didas’

Street Addiction Muzik Group releases new LP ‘U.S.A. (Undeniable Street Addiction)’

The performers of hip hop known as the Street Addiction Muzik Group have released their latest LP record, “U.S.A.,” which acronym stands for “Undeniable Street Addiction.” The long-playing album comprises 18 original tracks for an approximate total listening time of an hour and 15 minutes. This superlative length brings Street Addiction’s new record closer to the average length of a double LP than to that of a typical long-playing album, which usually clocks in at 40-42 minutes. As might be inferred by the name of the artist, “U.S.A.” has been published on the Street Addiction Muzik Group independent record label. Aggressive, straight-up, and directly from the urban poets of America’s inner cities, “U.S.A.” is a milestone of hip-hop music for the new millennium.

Street Addiction Muzik Group’s “U.S.A.” record is a particularly momentous achievement for the rising rap label, which opened its doors in 2013 with such immediate successes as “REM” by the Young Moors, “Party x Bull—-t” by Yum Pow, and “No Cut: the Red and Blue Tapes” by Hye Def. Speaking of how the label came to be and what brought its various artists to music in general, they write: “We come from different backgrounds, but music is our savior. Growing up, music was the light that guided us through the darkness. It kept us level when things appeared shaky. This is true to this day. We’ve come together through a common love and passion for the hip-hop culture. Our goal is to preserve the music while contributing to and advancing it.”

The idea that the hip hop genre is sorely in need of help is not unique to Street Addiction, but the label’s genuine concern and determination to uphold and elevate the American-founded, urban music style is clear – and they have a plan of action.

“We’re from an era when songs weren’t written for radio,” they explain. “Songs were written from the soul. Today, everything on the radio sounds the same. There’s no variety. This compilation is anti-radio. It exhibits an array of styles. It’s from the heart. This is real hip-hop.”
